How to Add Handrails to An Existing Pool

2022-09-20 11:54:36

There are several ways to attach handrails to your existing pool deck. These options range from labor-intensive and expensive to simple and inexpensive.

When handrails are installed in a new pool, anchors are typically poured onto the deck for the handrail or ladder to sit on. These pre-installed anchors allow the handrail to be easily removed for easy grounding.

Even if no handrails were installed when the pool was built, there is still hope for them.

Option 1

Handrail anchor

One option is to cut a small section of the deck between the ladder cup placement and the edge of the pool wall to allow the cups to be attached and the bonding wires to be attached to the pool structure.

Once this is done, place the handrail anchor cups in the cut section and attach the bonding wire (#8 copper wire) to the anchor cups and connect to the edge of the pool or the bonding wire running around the pool at the grid. Then re-inject that section of the deck.

This option will take longer than most other options as the cut will need to be re-poured with concrete and may not have a seamless finish. When cutting the deck, make sure to cut an area large enough to install the anchors, but not so much as to compromise the integrity of the pool structure or cause cracks in the deck.* Although this can be done by the homeowner, it is highly recommended that the handrail be secured to the pool structure by a qualified electrician by local codes and requirements.

Option 2

Core drill

Another option is to rent a 'core drill'. Drill anchor holes in the deck. The core drill option requires the handrail locations to be properly marked before drilling can begin. Remember the common motto here: Measure twice, cut once.

Do not overheat the drill and keep debris out of the pool while drilling. After drilling and removing the core, there are some variations before installing the handrail.

First, you can put pea gravel at the bottom of the hole to help keep the handrail from going too deep and help hold it in place.

Then, in addition to pea gravel, you can also insert a PVC sleeve into the hole. If you choose this variation, choose a PVC that is large enough for the handrail to slip through. Also, the hole in the deck needs to be enlarged so that the PVC sleeve can be inserted.

A third and final variation allows you to stop the handrail by pouring quick cleats into the bottom of the drilled hole.

If you choose this option, make sure you only have enough quick cleats in the base. If you pour too much, the handrail will not fit properly. Additionally, wait for the quick cleans to fully set before inserting the handrail into the hole, unless you want the handrail to be a permanent fixture.*This can be done by the homeowner, but We strongly recommend that the handrails be secured to the pool structure by a qualified electrician by local codes and requirements.

Option 3

The last option is very simple and unobtrusive to your deck. This option uses an "on-deck mount anchor". This option, like the other options, requires the handrail locations to be properly marked before drilling can begin.

With this option, you only need a drill and a masonry drill bit. After marking the locations of both deck mount anchors, drill the appropriate holes for the anchor bolts.

Most deck mount anchor sets come with the necessary mounting hardware. The deck is now ready to be anchored. Then attach the handrail to the anchor.

This option is available for either concrete or wood decks. Use drill bits and anchors appropriate for your deck type.
